We are excited to share that Dior Violin (Muhammadyor Tulaganov, BMus ’18) has been featured by the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST) in their article “On a Striking Note.” The article highlights Dior’s journey from first discovering the viola to building a thriving career as both a performer and educator.

Discovering the Viola

Dior’s journey began at age 16 when he first heard a senior student play the viola. Its sound—simultaneously cool, warm, and deep—captivated him immediately. This encounter inspired Dior to switch from violin to viola, marking the beginning of a lifelong passion.

“It had such a fascinating sound that was at once cool, warm and deep… I was immediately drawn to this instrument.” – Dior

His studies at YST Conservatory have been fundamental in shaping him into the professional violist he is today, guided by the advice of Assoc Prof Zhang Manchin: “Three things should always be solid in your playing – rhythm, intonation, and sound.”

Performance Highlights

During his time at YST, Dior had the privilege of performing in masterclasses with leading violists including Lars Anders Tomter, Richard O’Neill, Donald McInnes, and Karen Dreyfus. He also attended renowned music festivals worldwide, such as:

  • Music Academy of the West Summer Festival (USA)

  • Kammermusik Campus Festival (Germany)

  • Stavanger International Chamber Music Festival (Norway)

Dior served as principal violist at the 4th Seoul International Community Orchestra Festival in 2017, collaborating with musicians from around the globe. He has also competed successfully in competitions, including the Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition (2nd prize, USA, 2017) and four-time winner of the National Classical Music Competition in Uzbekistan.

Teaching & Outreach

Beyond performing, Dior is deeply passionate about teaching and mentoring young musicians. His outreach includes:

  • Mentoring youth at the Singapore International String Conference

  • Collaborating with Music Mood on the online learning project “Music Moment”

Through these initiatives, Dior helps aspiring musicians develop their skills while inspiring a love for classical music.

Professional Growth & Future Plans

Dior’s professional path continues to expand internationally. He will join the Sun Symphony Orchestra (Vietnam) as guest principal violist, gaining experience in orchestral repertoire, cultural exchange, and new musical insights.

He emphasizes to young musicians: make the most of your conservatory experience. YST provides world-class resources, faculty support, and opportunities to grow both artistically and professionally.
